Gallery

OK guys,

Now I've had some time to play with the forums and get them sorted a bit further, and now some instructions.

One of the biggest problems we have with the gallery is that we only have limted size on this server, while the good friend of mine was kind enough to give me 100MB while only paying for 50MB, it can still run out VERY quickly, so now is the time I should put down the quick instructions on how to do this properly so we don't go over.

Just a quick side note, we do have a 1GB traffic limit on out server per month, that means that only 1000MB of data can be transfered out of our page per month, which is enough, unless this isn't addressed now.

Currently we have used about 30MB of the server's space, and that leaves 70MB left.. at the moment, we have a relatively empty gallery, but...

People have nice cameras, and there is nothing wrong with that, but nice cameras take nice pictures, and they do this mainly by putting ALOT of detail into that picture = the higher the detail = the higher the "MP" (Mega Pixel) setting = the higher the file size.

And this is where our problem lays, in 2 places; the file's physical dimentions, and it's storage size:

Physical dimensions because some people have small screens, or have their screens set to a low resolution, like 640x480 or 800x600, meaning if you upload a picture that is 2048 x 1024 (a 2MP photo), then for someone viewing at 800x600,... the picture would be 4x as large as their screen (2x vertical and 2x horizontal) !!!! And they don't really get to enjoy it..

File size because not everyone here has got super fast internet (like the Swedes DAMN YOUR FAST INTERNET!!) and downloading a 1mb - 2mb file takes along time for some people, and if it takes too long for one picture then they won't come back, simple.

SOOOO...... I have made some changes and have some really easy instructions on how to resize your pictures BEFORE you upload them to the gallery.

First of all.. Download this wonderful little utility from the Microsoft website, I've linked it for you below

Image resizer

Once you download it, install it, it's free, very small, and won't lay a burden on your PC.

Next

Go to the folder that you have your pics. If you have them on your digital camera, then you will do best to copy them to your computer first. Make a folder somewhere and copy them there. If the pictures are already on your computer then great, go to that folder..

Hint: For the ROSE screenshots folder go to C:\Program Files\Triggersoft\Rose Online\Capture. This is the folder that all screenshot go when you click the camera button or press the "Prt Scr" key on your keyboard when you are in game, go to.

Next

Right-click on the picture you want to resize, and in your sub-menu you will see a new entry, called "Resize Pictures"

Click on it.

Now you will see another menu

Choose the option for "Large (fits 1024 x 768 screen)" and click OK

You will see that there will be a NEW picture fle created in the folder that your picture is originally in but now with the addtion of the word "(Large)" to the end of it's name.

THIS is the one you will be uploading.... What it did was made a copy of the original picture and re-sized it's physical dimensions and it's file size..

As you can see in this pic, a photo I took at 3.2MP is showing up as a HUGE 1.3MB!!! if we all uploaded photos this then we could only fit another 57 photos total on our lovely little web server that is holding our space on the internet.

The other sizes are also there for comparison, and I have placed them here so you can see the physical dimension differences too

DSC06450 - We can fit only 58 of these on the server
DSC06450 (Large) - We can fit 700 of these on the server
DSC06450 (Medium) - We can fit 1076 of these on the server
DSC06450 (Small) - We can fit 1555 of these on the server

Before you click on them, take a mental note of how slow or fast each one loads. You'll quickly see that the (Large) and the (Medium) ones are the best balance of size and speed Smile

OK, you resized your pic!, Fantastic!!.. Nice little trick, is if you drag over lots of pics in your folder, you can right-click on them and resize the LOT in one go!! (might take a few extra seconds)

Now, to upload them to the gallery!!

Your already at our website, so go click on the Gallery Link up above, actually, hold in the "Shift" key as you click on it, this will make the internet browser open the gallery in a new window, so you can still read this page Smile

Login if you need to and then go back to the gallery, look for the "Upload file" link. You will now see some boxes to add your pics/photos. Click on the first "Browse" button and navigate to select your picture.

Make sure you choose the one you resized with the (Large) or (Medium) ending on it.

If you want to upload more in one go then select the next 'Browse' button and add another..

NOTE: I have put a 1MB file restriction per session on this, so make sure that the file/s you upload now do not total 1MB or more.

Click "Continue" and wait a for them to upload (see the progress bar at the bottom of the browser window)

If it worked, a window will appear saying something like:

Successful Uploads
1 uploads were successful.

Please click 'Continue' to add the files to albums.

Click 'Continue'

Next it will show you a screen that has a preview of your pic (or one of them) and it's asking you to select an album.

PLEASE, select the correct album for your pic as I stated in the other post about the gallery, or it will just look silly if we put ROSE screenshots in the album called "Our Country" as true as it may be sometimes (Click HERE if you forgot which ones are which)

Next, type in a title of your photo or picture, and if you like a description of it as well (you can skip the description if you like). Keywords are also optional, they are words that we can search for your picture on once we get really big, so if you like, put in some descriptive words like "hills flowers motorbike tree crash injury" with them all seperated by a space.

If you uploaded more then one picture you can follow this last step to assign them to the correct spots and give them titles/descriptions.

When you have done all your pics, you will get a final message saying:

The previous file was placed successfully.

You have successfully placed all the files.

Click 'Continue' for the last time and your all DONE!!!
